the title of this post comes from something my 12 year old Little Sister said when we were hanging out tonight. cute, eh?
i have done Big Brothers Big Sisters for the last four years, and it has been a great experience. not only is it fun to be silly and lighthearted, but it also helps me remember the more innocent and carefree days of childhood. my Little Sister reminds me of what it was like to be a little girl who wore blue nail polish and Limited Too clothes and who was obsessed with boy bands and Hello Kitty (ok, i still think Hello Kitty is adorable).
anyway, due to the increased demands of grad school, i wasn't able to do BBBS this year. i was disappointed that i couldn't fit it into my schedule, but i knew it would be too difficult to make it work. however, in the time that has elapsed between when i was meeting with my Little and now, i have found there is a void in my life. i've noticed myself being more selfish with my time, which is understandable in grad school, but shouldn't be my focus. what BBBS provided me, above everything else, was the constant reminder that life is about much more than me. i think that in the last few months i have forgotten why i was doing BBBS in the first place. it was not for me, but for those kids.
something else that God has really used to remind me about selflessness (as i'm sure has also been the same with other people) has been the earthquake in Haiti. honest moment: when i first heard about it, i read the headline and then thought nothing more about it. how could i have been so insensitive? it didn't really hit me until i got an email from the director of Kanakuk Kamps (where i worked for two summers) about
Kanakuk Haiti, an off-shoot of the organization that was created a few years ago. when i started thinking about the people whose lives have been destroyed and who are suffering, i realized the magnitude of my selfishness. no matter what is going on in my life, i should be able to give up something--my time, money, skills--to make a difference in someone else's life. i think i overlooked that somewhere in all the craziness that has been my world recently.
i am thankful that i have been given the opportunity to impact other's lives for the better, whether it be my Little Sister or the people of Haiti, and maybe be able to make them smile so much their face hurts. (cheesy? yes. i'm ok with that.)
